Megan Russell's Profile
Megan is a metal worker living in Austin Texas. she has worked for other
metal smiths for almost a decade, and have decided to try her hand at
it. Smithing of any sort has always
had
a deep tradition in making functional items that are beautiful. Just
because something is pretty does not mean it cannot be useful. She says
she tries very hard to keep that balance. "Currently I work in stainless
steel I like it best because I do not have to worry about it tarnishing
or rusting later on. I form the metal cold with ball peen hammers and
wood blocks in the traditional form of whitesmithing."
Yes, A whitesmith (if you're unfamiliar with the term) is a person who
works with "white" or light-colored metals such as tin and pewter. While
blacksmiths work mostly with hot metal, whitesmiths do the majority of
their work on cold metal (although they might use a forge to shape their
raw materials).
The term is also applied to metalworkers who do only finishing work –
such as filing or polishing – on iron and other "black" metals.
Whitesmiths make things such as tin or pewter cups, water pitchers,
forks, spoons, and candle holders.
Whitesmithing, according to Megan "is the method of making armor. The
metal is formed cold, so that it retains strength."
