Geranium Hanging Baskets

Geraniums are great plants for hanging planters offering
such a great range of colors.
This great photo shows a basket planted just in Ivy Geranium.
It can be somewhat confusing however when it comes to choosing the right
type of geranium for your baskets or hanging planters as there are
usually many types of Geranium on offer.
Hint – When Choosing Geraniums for your Planters
The main thing is to remember there are either upright or cascading
Geraniums.
Upright Geraniums are stately and regal and look good in a decorative
hanging planter and/or will benefit from being planted with other
annuals that have a trailing habit – so that they spill over the sides
of your planter or hanging basket.
Cascading Geraniums – Called Ivy Geraniums – because that is how they
grow – the spill and cascade over the side – as in the photo above they
can be planted alone and they will fill the planter.
More on the Types of Geraniums
There are different Types of Geraniums – all suited to hanging planters
Zonal, Annual or Bedding Geraniums
Zonal Geraniums have an upright growth habit – they do
no tend to spill or tumble. They are also referred to as Annual or
Bedding Geraniums.
Because of their upright habit Zonal Geraniums are often used in hanging
planters mixed in with other trailing plants.

Fancy-Leafed Geraniums
Fancy leafed Geraniums also have an upright habit, and
while they love full sun, however they will also tolerate part shade –
the reward you with both flowers and attractive foliage.
Ivy Geraniums
Ivy geranium have waxy, almost succulent like leaves and
are a great choice for hanging baskets or hanging planters due to their
cascading habit.
Ivy geranium’s are perfect for hanging baskets but protected from the
hot afternoon sun.

New Geraniums for this year.
Geranium Tornado Carmine
This ivy geranium produces bright, cheerful blooms on a
naturally compact and well-branched plant. With a wider spreading habit
than other ivy geraniums, Tornado produces blooms that are tighter
clustered on plants that don't need pinching.
An excellent choice for planters and baskets, this heat tolerant variety
flowers continuously throughout summer in full to part sun and well
drained soil.
Geranium ‘Southcombe Double’
This geranium doesn’t have the typical cup-shaped
geranium flowers to give it away, but deeply divided foliage and hardy
manner say geranium loud and clear.
Geranium ‘Southcombe Double’ fluffy blossoms that are
layers of slender pink petals.
The profuse flowers are kind of a cross between an aster and a scabiosa.
The bright pink holds its color well in full sun. ‘Southcombe Double’
tends to begin blooming later in the season than most true geraniums.
The foliage is similar to the lacy leaves of Geranium
sanguineum and it stays attractive through most of the growing season,
which is lucky because Geranium ‘Southcombe Double’ is a compact plant
that’s ideal for garden planters.
If the plant should become a bit ragged from too much blooming, simply
shear it back and it will revive in the traditional hardy geranium
fashion
